PENTAX Optio 230 Firmware Update Version 1.10

Firmware is software that runs inside of your digital camera. This firmware download will update your Optio 230 camera from version 1.0 to version 1.10.

How to check your current Optio 230 firmware version:

  1. Turn your Optio 230 off, then remove the CompactFlash card.
  2. Press your MENU button, then turn your camera on while still holding the MENU button down. Your camera's current firmware version will display on your color LCD screen for about 5 seconds, after which your camera will turn on normally. If you currently have version 1.0, then you can update it to version 1.10 safely.

CAUTION:

We recommend using the Optio 230 AC adapter (optional) when updating your Optio 230 firmware. If you do not have an AC adapter, make sure your battery power is at FULL strength. If the power runs out during the firmware update process, and your camera turns off, you will damage your camera. Repairs for this type of damage will not be covered under your camera's warranty.

Instructions:

Download the file o2_fw11.exe if you have a Windows PC, or o2_fw11m.sea if you have a Macintosh. Save the file on your computer's hard drive. It is a self-extracting archive file, and must be expanded to proceed.

  1. Expand your download file by double clicking it.
    • Windows: a folder will be created on your c: drive called optio2fw
    • Macintosh: a folder will be created called o2_fw11m folder
  2. This folder will contain two files: fwdc105p.bin which is the firmware update file itself, and readme.txt which is this instruction document. We suggest you print the instructions to use as a reference.
  3. Copy the firmware update file fwdc105p.bin to the root directory of your camera's CompactFlash card (make sure the CompactFlash card is otherwise empty).
    • Note: The root directory is the TOP level of your CompactFlash card. That is, the firmware update file must be directly on the card and not in any sub-folders.
    • You can copy the firmware update file to the camera's CompactFlash card by attaching the camera directly to your computer. The camera thus becomes a removable disk drive, and you simply copy the firmware update file to this removable disk drive then disconnect the camera. You can also use a CompactFlash card reader attached to your computer to copy the firmware update file to your camera's CompactFlash card. Afterward, remove the CompactFlash card from the reader, and put it back into the camera.
  4. You should now have your Optio 230 ready for the firmware update. Make sure your camera is turned off (if not already so) and disconnected from the computer, that you have fully inserted the CompactFlash card containing the firmware update file, and that you have the optional AC adapter attached or you have full battery power.
  5. Run the firmware update.
  6. Press your MENU button, then turn your camera on while still holding the MENU button down. You will see now loading on your camera's color LCD display if successful. If you do not see the now loading message, you may not have copied the firmware update file successfully to your camera's CompactFlash card, or the file may be corrupted requiring you to download it again.
    • You may also see a program update message appear on your LCD display. If you see this message, simply use your 4-way controller to select yes and then press your camera's OK button to begin the firmware update.
  7. As the firmware update runs, you will see the message updating on your camera's LCD display. When the update is complete, you will see a fully green progress bar and the message complete on your camera's LCD display. When complete, turn the camera back off and remove the CompactFlash card.
  8. Check your current firmware version by pressing your MENU button, then turning your camera on while still holding the MENU button down. Remember to do this while the CompactFlash card, with the firmware update file, is not in the camera. If you see that your firmware version is now 1.10, you are successful.
  9. Your CompactFlash card still contains the firmware update file. Be sure you format the card or otherwise erase the firmware update file from the card before starting to take pictures again.

Many current and recent Macintosh computers will automatically recognize the camera and load their own USB mass storage drivers. When you attach the camera to your Mac, the camera should automatically appear right on your desktop as an untitled disk drive, which you can double click to access.

However, if you have a USB capable Macintosh with MacOS 8.6 or greater, and your computer sends you error messages or won't otherwise recognize the camera when it is attached, you may need to download and install these Macintosh USB drivers. Please note, these drivers are also available on the CD-ROM originally packaged with your Optio camera. However, we invite you to download and use the drivers on this page if you are no longer in possession of your original CD-ROM.
